Alcohol Primary Prevention
Decreasing alcohol use by minors is a crucial public health priority with far-reaching benefits for our communities. Minors who consume alcohol are at risk of various health and developmental issues, including impaired brain development, academic problems, and increased likelihood of engaging in risky behaviors such as driving under the influence.
By preventing alcohol use among minors, we can safeguard their health and well-being, promote academic success, and reduce the potential for accidents and injuries. Additionally, addressing underage alcohol use helps to create a culture of responsible decision-making and reinforces legal compliance, supporting a safer and more supportive environment for young people to thrive.
Through education, parental involvement, community partnerships, and enforcement of alcohol regulations, we can collectively work towards preventing alcohol use by minors and fostering healthier, brighter futures for our youth.
A useful resource for parents, through the State of North Dakota, is Parents Lead.
Parents Lead is an evidence-based prevention program that provides parents and caregivers with a wide variety of tools and resources to support them in creating a safe environment for their children that promotes behavioral health. What is behavioral health? It’s defined as a state of mental/emotional being and/or choices and actions that affect wellness. Put simply, it’s our health and well-being.
The parent-child relationship is essential to the development and well-being of children. In fact, healthy bonding and attachment between parent and child is one of the biggest factors preventing behavioral health issues like underage drinking, drug use, depression, and anxiety.
Through four primary parental behaviors, all parents can make a difference in the lives of their children:
- Ongoing communication
- Effective monitoring
- Positive role-modeling
- Engagement and support
And, when the community and professionals who interact with children and parents share the same values and are equipped with the right resources, our children can grow up in a world where they are safe and healthy. Isn't that all we can hope for?
Parents Lead is built and supported by behavioral health professionals and parents in the North Dakota Department of Health and Human Services' Behavioral Health Division.

Parents Can take the pledge to not provide alcohol to minors or be social hosts where minors consume alcohol.
The NOT IN MY HOUSE (NIMH) campaign is about addressing the issues of youth access of alcohol in the community, which involves parents, merchants, and youth themselves. NIMH parents pledge their commitment to joining other parents in providing a fun, safe, and substance-free environment for our children. NIMH merchants pledge to comply by following the law and alcohol regulations to not sell alcohol to young people under 21 years old. NIMH youth are increasing awareness of the issue by talking to adults in their community. We recognize that we cannot supervise our teens 24/7, nor can we always control the choices they make. However, we will do our part to discourage underage drinking and we will do our best to help each other support and monitor our teens.
